FATHER HENRI NOUWEN
Our School is named after the well-known author of works on spirituality, Father Henri Nouwen.
Even as a young child in the Netherlands, Henri wanted to become a priest. His dream came true in 1957, when he was ordained.
Father Henri Nouwen studied Theology, Psychology and Psychiatry. He became a teacher at Notre Dame and a professor at Yale and Harvard Universities. He wrote over 40 books about our spirituality and about our relationship with God. Many people admired his work, and he traveled aroundthe world, speaking, writing and teaching.
He was a priest who understood the issues affecting ordinary people. He emphasized the importance of caring for one another and said that we are responsible for every one in our community, not just for ourselves.
He believed in not only prayer, but in service too. He said we must think about good works, but we must actually go out and do good things, too.
Eventually, he believed that God was calling him to spend his life among people with disabilities. He met Jean Vanier, the founder of L’Arche, and joined the L’Arche Daybreak community, which is very near our school. He lived with people with disabilities and appreciated their honesty. He remained at Daybreak until he died, in 1996.
We are honoured that our school is named after such an inspiring man. Let us remember his message as we pray, learn and work together as a school community.
